Hi, I am Karen Clarke. I have been a registered social worker for 25 years and in 2004 I completed my Masters in Social Work with a specialization in Clinical Counselling. For me the Masters Program was the beginning of a journey that has given me a deep sense of professional fulfilment as I have had the privilege of working closely with clients as they have overcome confusion, challenges, frustrations, helplessness, sadness, hurt and pain in their lives.
To enhance my skills I have continued to complete multiple workshops and training events. Most recently I completed a Trauma Practitioner certification which requires yearly course work and testing. This keeps my knowledge and skills current, relevant and sharp.
I work with clients across the life span. To do this it takes a comprehensive methodology as well as expertise in specific theoretical approaches that will be effective for my clients. For me the attachment knowledge, research and literature has informed my work with all ages and I am further informed by trauma and neuro relational theories. Through the attachment lens I have found Emotionally Focused Therapy to be especially effective for couple work. It has been professionally fulfilling to see couples overcome their challenges and find more satisfying and fulfilling relationships. For children the attachment theory underlies play therapy as children find their way and heal from disappointments, hurts and trauma in their young lives. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy along with relaxation techniques and mindfulness has been specifically effective in helping clients to overcome panic attacks and manage anxiety in their lives. I also use Crisis, Narrative or Solution Focused approaches when, after the assessment, I determine which approach would be relevant and helpful in the situation.
In my personal life I am a wife, mom of four sons and a smitten grandmother. I enjoy a wide variety of activities, my top three being running, skiing and salmon fishing! I am a proud Newfoundlander that has embraced the many diversities, cultures and ethnicities that have enriched my life.
